UK Police Fleet Electrification: Understanding the Scale of the Challenge

What will it take to transition police fleets across the UK to electric vehicles?

Commissioned by the Midlands Net Zero hub (MNZH) and funded by the Department for Energy and Net Zero, this report provides the first national assessment of the infrastructure, investment and considerations needed to support that transition. MNZH procured Dynamon to undertake the review and drawing on telematics data, force-level analysis and national modelling, it estimates that around 18,300 charge points will be required across more than 2,000 police sites, representing an investment of approximately £1.4 billion.

The research shows that installing charge points is only part of the challenge, it highlights that around 80% of the projected cost is linked to grid connections and electrical upgrades, highlighting a major barrier that will influence both the pace and affordability of fleet electrification across the policing estate.

The report examines how requirements vary between forces and locations, where the greatest obstacles are likely to emerge, and some steps that can be taken to reduce costs. It explores how smarter fleet planning, early investment and shared charging approaches could help make the transition more practical and cost-effective.

It also sets out the role that government, police forces, network operators and industry partners can play in accelerating progress while ensuring operational capability is maintained.

Whether you're involved in fleet decarbonisation, infrastructure planning, public sector investment or energy networks, this report provides valuable insight into one of the most significant transport transformation challenges facing UK public services.
