The Midlands Net Zero Hub (MNZH) is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from Midlands Local Authorities, individually or as a consortium, to participate in a pioneering project to develop area-based carbon insetting solutions. These projects will deliver local, scalable approaches to carbon removal, focusing on pyrolysis and biochar applications that cut emissions, create economic and social benefits, and support councils in achieving Net Zero targets.
Successful applicants will work with an independent consultant that is being procured by MNZH to:
- Assess carbon insetting opportunities and feedstock availability.
- Develop tailored case studies and investable business cases.
- Establish governance structures and joint ventures.
- Produce national guidance for wider adoption.
This initiative builds on Shropshire Council’s demonstrator project, which uses pyrolysis to convert green waste into biochar and renewable energy, generating verified Carbon Removal Certificates (CORCs) and creating a circular economy model that is financially viable, scalable, and aligned with national priorities.
EOI submissions close at 11:59 pm on 12 January 2026, with successful applicants notified by 16 January 2026.
