About the Project
In 2024, the Midlands Net Zero Hub, on behalf of Midlands Nuclear, commissioned two strategic studies to explore:
- The potential for nuclear energy siting across the Midlands.
- The current and future nuclear-aligned skills base in the region.
These studies support Midlands Nuclear’s ambition to identify opportunities for nuclear generation and to better understand the region’s workforce capabilities - both now and in the future. This work also aligns with the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, which sets out a pathway to a fully clean power system by 2030, aiming to secure energy supply, drive regional investment, and tackle climate change.
Siting Study - Delivered by Equilibrion
This study evaluates where and how nuclear energy could be deployed to supply low-carbon electricity, hydrogen, and sustainable fuels for industry, transport, and homes across the Midlands. It is accompanied by a visually engaging brochure that highlights the region’s potential (which will be available from 8th July).
Skills Study – Delivered by Cogent Skills
This report provides a comprehensive analysis of nuclear-relevant skills in the Midlands, including:
- A review of current educational and training provision.
- Recommendations for future skills development to meet the needs of a growing nuclear sector.
